About us :: Studio history

Acheron Design began its life in 2004, when Athol Birtley and Lewis Strudwick developed Laboratory Mission X while studying at university. That game made use of the MASI-CiX SE engine, a 2D OpenGL game engine the pair had written several years earlier at high school. Laboratory Mission X was seemingly misunderstood by the gaming public upon its initial release - but this was okay, since the game was developed in spare time and had a budget of around AU$2. Confident that it would become a cult title if given enough time, Lewis and Athol moved onto bigger challenges.

The next phase in the Acheron Design saga concerns Renegade RX: A Jake Granite Adventure ('Renegade' for short). Renegade was a bold attempt to tell the tragic tale of Jake Granite through the medium of top-down shooter. A strange blend of Macbeth, Oedipus, Dumb & Dumber, and Raptor, the game was never destined for commercial success. With the able assistance of artists Nathan Leigh and Brad Hammond, the game reached tech-demo status in late 2005, and was promptly noticed by the Melbourne development community.

Development of Renegade was put on hold as fee-paying projects started to come our way. Our first titles were arcade machines, DVD games, and other similarly glamorous affairs. Brian Lara Pressure Play for the PSP was our first major development contract, and the game went to #1 in the UK and in Australia (under the Ricky Ponting name).

Acheron Design now combines contracting and outsourcing work with development of original IP titles. A list of our projects, both past and present, can be found on the games page.
